Where are you from? What brought you to Sioux Falls, and/or What do you love about Sioux Falls?
I am from Hopkins, Minnesota but was born in Fayetteville, Arkansas. I moved to Sioux Falls in 2012 to begin nursing school at Augustana University. My favorite feature of Sioux Falls is the bike trail. I run part of it about every day! While pavement is hard on my knees, it provides a variety of routes which has let me get to know Sioux Falls. (I think running is the best way to know a city.) The greatest challenge is the winter wind, but it wouldn't be fun if something didn't hurt!
What are your two favorite outdoor activities and why?
Winter camping is always an adventure--there is something thrilling about staying warm in -15 degree weather. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area is silvery and desolate, and voices echo from cliffs and elevated groupings of white pines miles away. It's never dead quiet, more like a silent breath of contentment.
Backpacking is my all time favorite outdoor sport. Spending days driven only by the purpose of walking is exhilarating. There is a specific kind of physical fatigue I feel only when backpacking. One of my lifetime goals is to backpack all 30 national trails. I am planning to retiring early and donating all my vacation days to backpacking!
What is your favorite place you have traveled to and why?
The most difficult place I have visited is Sierra Leone.
What is your favorite part of working at the GOS?
James regularly brings or makes food for the staff, and my favorites have been his chocolate chip zucchini bread (filled with nuts, dried fruit, chocolate, and wonder), fig bread from Breadico, homemade Christmas chocolates, and a variety of cookies. Needless to say, the staff is eternally grateful for all his treats. After all, food is the best way to bond with others.
I'd say our staff is as tight as the knit of a Smartwool sock.
If you were stranded on a desert island, and only had 3 foods to have with you, what would they be?
Assuming that this desert island is completely barren of any sort of vegetation my foods would be fish (I would prefer tuna steaks, Coho salmon, and maybe a walleye or two), cabbage, and apples. Let me explain the last two items. Cabbage does not have significant nutritional value, however, I can use it as a long-lasting fresh green or make sauerkraut. I am pointing a finger at my German heritage for this one! As for apples, I inherited a specific type of anxiety from my mother; this anxiety increases as the number of apples in the refrigerator decreases. I figure that I am going to be stressed enough, so why not reduce some of this stress by having ready available apples?
