Come Hike With Us
From Great Outdoor Store
A few weeks ago, we taped a sign-up sheet to the counter at the Great Outdoor Store.
We wanted to see if people would be interested in hiking various parks in southeastern South Dakota. But I won’t lie – I was a little nervous as I walked past that blank sheet of paper every day. Would anyone sign up before the corners of the sheet curled and the tape tore away? Or, what if they did sign up, and we were faced with guiding them through the trails and paths that make this part of the state so beautiful?
Oh the pressure.
The next weekend, my husband and our two dogs and I went for a run at Newton Hills State Park, which is near our farm. It was a short drive – much shorter than the weekend trips we used to make regularly to the Black Hills, the Big Horns or the Tetons. As I started my second loop around the horse trails, I began to see them from an outsider’s perspective.
This is what it might look like to a new hiker: The sumac was changing to fall colors. The humid air was drying out and growing crisper by the day. The trail, a ribbon of dirt through the trees, was perfect.
I had that sense of wonder.
I realized then that it wasn’t the park or this particular trail that gave me that feeling. Instead, it was the letting go. Unplugging, recharging, finding that bit of freedom and then reconnecting – to the trees, the grass, the dirt, our dogs, our lives, me, and the great world spinning.
When I got to the store this morning, I checked the sign-up sheet.
It’s nearly full.
So here we go!
Starting Oct. 4 at 5:15 p.m., we will have our first group hike.
This time we will meet out at Great Bear
We’ll meet every other week, regardless of weather, and explore the trails in southeastern South Dakota.
Sometimes we may have fun new gear to test out. Most times we will learn something.
Every time, we will have fun.
If you are interested, shoot me an email and I will add you to the list.
